6 Common types of sewing threads
1. Cotton sewing thread
Cotton thread is strong and stable. It resists heat well, making it great for high-speed sewing and durable pressing. But it has lower elasticity and wear resistance. It includes regular soft cotton thread. It also has wax thread, which is treated with sizing and waxing. Plus, there’s mercerized thread. Wax thread is smooth and stiff. It has a stable twist and better strength. This improves wear resistance and reduces friction while sewing. It is suitable for sewing stiff fabrics, leather fabrics, or clothes that need high-temperature ironing. Mercerized thread is soft in texture; the yarn looks plump and shiny, the strength is also improved, and it feels smooth. It is mostly used for sewing medium and high-end cotton products.
2. Silk sewing thread
Silk thread has excellent luster, a soft feel, a smooth surface, so the seam is smooth, and the heat resistance is also good. Its strength and elasticity are better than cotton thread. Silk thread comes in two types: filament and spun. It’s often used to sew luxury items like silk, wool, and leather clothing. Thick silk thread works well for wool clothing, buttonholes, and visible seams. Thin silk thread is best for sewing delicate silk fabrics. Silk thread has many downsides. It is expensive, wears out easily, and can detach from the bobbin. Because of this, it is being replaced by polyester filament thread for most uses. The only exceptions are sewing silk and some high-end clothing.
3. Polyester sewing thread
Polyester thread is popular for sewing cotton, chemical fibers, and blends. It has high strength and good wear resistance. Plus, it shrinks little and absorbs moisture well. It resists heat and corrosion, doesn’t mildew, and is safe from moths. Polyester sewing thread leads the market. This is thanks to plenty of raw materials, low prices, and great sewing properties.

Polyester staple fiber is mainly used for sewing cotton, polyester-cotton, pure wool, and blended fabrics. It is now a popular choice for sewing thread. Nylon sewing thread is strong and durable. It has a glossy finish and good elasticity. That’s why it’s often used on tougher fabrics. It has limited heat resistance. So, it’s not suitable for high-speed sewing or fabrics that need high-temperature ironing. Nylon sewing thread comes in three types: filament thread, staple fiber thread, and elastic deformation thread. Nylon filament thread is great for sewing chemical fiber clothes. It’s also useful for tasks like buttoning and making buttonholes. Nylon monofilament transparent sewing thread works well for hemming. You can use it on trouser legs, cuffs, and buttons. It’s also great for decoration, like belt buckle loops in women’s clothing and hems of Chinese outfits.
5. Blended sewing thread
Blended sewing thread is mainly polyester-cotton blended thread and core-spun thread. It is a type of sewing thread with more specifications and a wider application range at present, and has potential for use. Polyester-cotton thread is a blend of 65% polyester staple fiber and 35% high-quality cotton. This thread has good strength, wear resistance, and heat resistance, and the thread is soft and elastic. It is suitable for sewing and hemming various cotton fabrics, chemical fiber fabrics, and knitted fabrics.
Core-spun thread is a new type of sewing thread. It is often made of synthetic fiber filament (mostly polyester) as the core thread and natural fiber (usually cotton) as the covering yarn. This thread combines the best of cotton and polyester. It is strong, soft, and elastic. Plus, it has a low shrinkage rate. It has increased the thread’s tolerance to high temperatures. This includes the heat from the friction of the needle eye. It is suitable for high-speed sewing of high-end clothing and medium-thick fabrics.
6. Decorative sewing thread
