Exploring the Cotton Fiber: Key Features Applications
Date: 2025/2/24 By: Winnie
Cotton fiber is a natural, soft, and fluffy staple fiber. As a natural fiber, it occupies a pivotal position in the textile industry due to its unique physical and chemical properties. It is not only widely used in the production of various types of clothing, but also plays an important role in the field of household goods and industrial materials.
What Is Cotton Fiber?
Cotton fiber covers the seeds of the cotton plant of the mallow family, also known as cotton, or simply cotton. Fiber cotton is developed from the epidermal cells nourished on the cotton seed, and its main component is cellulose, a natural polymer compound, the chemical structure formula (C6H10O5) n. Normal mature cotton cellulose content of about 94%, in addition to a small amount of polysaccharides, waxes, proteins, fats, water-soluble substances, ash, and other companion organisms. Because fiber cotton has many excellent economic properties, it is the most important raw material for the textile industry.
Cotton Fiber Characteristics
Cotton fiber is one of the most widely used and economically valuable textile fibers in the world, prized for its versatility, comfort, and breathability.
1. Physical Properties of Cotton Fiber
- High strength: fiber cotton has high strength, good abrasion resistance, and impact resistance. The strength of fine-staple cotton is 3.5-4.5cN, with a breaking length of 2125km; the strength of long-staple cotton is 46cN, with a breaking length of 30km.
- Breathability and Moisture Absorption: cotton fiber has good breathability and moisture absorption, and can quickly absorb and disseminate the heat and moisture generated by the human body, to keep the skin dry and comfortable. Its moisture absorption capacity can reach about 20% of its weight.
- Heat Resistance: fiber cotton heat resistance is better and can be in the 125-150 ℃ high temperature for a short period under the treatment, but the long-term role of high temperature will make the fiber cotton suffer damage.
- Poor Wrinkle Resistance: fiber cotton wrinkle resistance is poor, after washing and wearing easy to wrinkle, and deform.
- Poor Tensile: cotton fiber is poor in tensile, and not suitable for the production of textiles that require high elasticity.
2. Chemical Properties
- Alkali-resistant not acid-resistant: cotton fiber is more resistant to alkali, generally dilute alkali at room temperature on fiber cotton does not occur, but the strong alkali effect, the fiber cotton strength will decline. Cotton fibers are extremely unstable to inorganic acids, even if very dilute sulfuric acid will make it damaged, but the role of organic acids is weak, with almost no destructive effect.
- Light resistance is general: in the sunlight and the atmosphere fiber cotton will be slowly oxidized, so that the strength decreases.
- Good affinity for dyes: It has a good affinity for dyes, dyeing is easy, the color spectrum is complete, and the color is also more bright.
Production Process of Cotton Fibers
- Cultivation: Cotton grows in subtropical climates. Major producing countries include China, India, the United States, and Brazil.
- Harvesting: After the cotton bolls are ripe and split, they are picked either mechanically or by hand.
- Ginning: separating the fibers from the seeds.
- Spinning: The fibers are cleaned, carded, and spun into yarn for weaving or knitting.
Cotton Fibers Applications
Clothing: cotton fiber in the field of apparel applications is very broad, covering almost all types of clothing, wearing comfortable, soft skin-friendly, and breathable, providing excellent wearing experience, such as cotton T-shirts, shirts, sportswear, and jeans, etc., in addition to medical apparel and supplies will also use them.
Home furnishings: cotton fiber in the field of home furnishings applications are also very extensive. Because of its breathable, moisture absorption, high softness, as well as good light transmission, can be used for bedding, towels, curtains, and other household goods.
Industrial field: the application of fiber cotton in the industrial field is mainly focused on the production of filter cloth, conveyor belts, and insulation materials. Filter cloth made of fiber cotton is widely used in chemical and pharmaceutical industries because of its high strength and abrasion resistance; conveyor belts made of cotton fibers are widely used in logistics and manufacturing industries because of their good heat resistance and strong impact resistance.
In today’s increasingly environmentally conscious world, the sustainable development of cotton fibers is also receiving more and more attention. BOSTON Scrub also focuses on the sustainable development of the medical apparel industry, using high-quality recycled cotton to achieve the recycling of cotton resources.
