Lyocell fiber

Lyocell fiber

Date: 2024/12/26   By: Zoe Zhu

Lyocell fiber is made of natural plant fiber. It was introduced in the mid-1990s and is known as the most valuable product in the history of man-made fibers in the past half century.

“Lyocell” fiber is made of pulp formed by crushing renewable bamboo and wood. The advanced process makes its solvent recovery rate as high as 99.7%, which is not only energy-saving and environmentally friendly, but also sustainable. Clothes made of this fiber are not only natural in luster, smooth in touch, high in strength, and basically shrink-free, but also have good moisture permeability and breathability, and the effect of fabrics blended with wool is good.

Advantages and disadvantages of lyocell fiber

Lyocell fiber is a high-end fiber that combines the advantages of cotton, linen, silk, and polyester. It has better moisture absorption than cotton, and has the breathability and perspiration of linen, the soft touch and elegance of silk, and the strength of polyester. Compared with cotton and other fibers, it has the following incomparable outstanding characteristics.

1.Refreshing and cool

The smooth fiber surface makes Lyocell fiber feel like silk, soft and smooth, and cool to the touch without being icy.

2.Natural antibacterial

The moisture management function of Lyocell fiber prevents the surface from forming a breeding ground for bacteria and mites, thereby inhibiting the growth of bacteria and mites.

3.Moisture absorption and dryness

The unique fiber structure can effectively regulate the absorption and release of moisture, so that the sleeping environment remains dry and constant temperature.

4.Good insulation

The natural moisture content of Lyocell, coupled with its excellent moisture conduction properties, prevents it from accumulating static electricity, which helps to improve sleep quality.

There is no absolute perfection, and Lyocell also has its shortcomings

Lyocell is prone to snags and holes. The higher the content of Lyocell in clothing, the more likely it is to have such a situation.

It is delicate in washing, dry in the shade, do not wring, and do not contact acidic or alkaline detergents.

Clothes made of Lyocell dry slowly.

It is not as breathable as some blended fabrics.

It is easy to shrink.

Higher price: Due to the complex production process and high production cost of Lyocell fiber, the price is relatively high.

Easy to wrinkle: Lyocell fiber has poor wrinkle resistance and is easy to wrinkle.

Lyocell and Tencel

Lyocell and Tencel are the same fabric. Lyocell, commonly known as “Tencel”, is made from natural plant fibers. The difference between Lyocell and Tencel is mainly in the concept. Lyocell is a general term for wood pulp fibers. There are many companies that can produce Lyocell fibers, but only Lenzing’s Lyocell fibers can be called Tencel. In other words, Tencel is Lyocell, but Lyocell is not necessarily Tencel. Tencel is actually a fiber brand name, referring to the fiber brand under the Lenzing Group. In addition, Tencel™ is a legally protected brand trademark.

Since 1992, TENCEL™ Tencel™ brand fibers have been known for their excellent quality in sustainability, comfort and functionality, and have been leading sustainable development for more than 30 years. Tencel™ is a textile fiber brand under the Lenzing Group, which includes Tencel™ Lyocell fiber, Tencel™ Modal fiber and Tencel™ Lyocell filament. Tencel™ is not a fiber type or a generic fabric name. Tencel™ is a cellulose fiber brand.

Lyocell fabric care

Lyocell fabric cleaning precautions

1. Lyocell fabric is not resistant to acid and alkali. It is best to use a neutral detergent that does not contain enzymes or silk when washing.

2. Lyocell fabric cannot be soaked in chlorine-containing detergents. Oxygen-containing detergents can be used to remove color stains.

3. Use squeezing to wash. Do not wring it out by hand. It is best to squeeze out the water. After washing, hang it in the shade or hang it in half to dry in the shade.

4. Do not expose it to the sun when drying, because Tencel fabric is easy to deform after being exposed to the sun.

In short, for ordinary consumers like us, Lyocell fiber and Tencel are both good choices.
