Silver fiber of functional textiles

Date: 2024/12/13 By: Zoe Zhu
Silver has been used as currency, ornaments, utensils, poison detection tools, etc. since ancient times. About a thousand years ago, Mongolian herders knew that using silver utensils to hold mare’s milk could keep the milk from spoiling. When drinking water in the wild, just immerse the silver ornaments or silver utensils in the water and stir, and the water will become sterile water.
Modern scientific research has proved that silver ions have excellent antibiotic and sterilization effects. General antibiotics can only work on an average of 6 kinds of bacteria, but silver ions can kill 650 kinds of bacteria, and their ability to kill bacteria is outstanding.
Origin
The origin of silver fiber fabrics can be traced back to the early 20th century. Scientists selected silver from many metal materials as conductors for the telecommunications industry. The outstanding performance of silver materials soon made scientists and engineers realize that silver can also be woven into fabrics, thus creating a new material with unique properties.
Due to the high price, the first batch of silver fiber fabrics were only used for military purposes. Wearing clothes made of silver fiber fabrics, soldiers can protect themselves well from electric shocks and electromagnetic interference.

Principle
Silver fiber is a fiber-based material. By combining silver particles with fibers, a new material with special functions is formed. Silver particles have excellent antibacterial properties and can effectively kill bacteria, viruses and other microorganisms, thereby protecting our health. In addition, silver fiber also has excellent electrical and thermal conductivity, which makes it have a wide range of application prospects in the field of electronics. In addition, silver fiber also has good air permeability and moisture absorption, making it an ideal functional textile material.

Current types
Type 1: Electroplated coated silver fiber
The principle is to place the yarn in a silver dyeing vat, apply electricity to the yarn, and permanently bond a layer of pure silver to the fiber surface in a special way. It not only maintains the original textile properties, but is also endowed with the magical effect of silver particles. Technical limitations make this fabric expensive.
Type 2 :Forged fusion silver fiber
Through forging fusion, silver particles are integrated into yarn fabrics. After high-temperature forging, it is completely fused with other yarn fabrics to become fiber. The advantage is that the antibacterial effect of forged fusion silver fiber is the same as that of silver plating. The disadvantage is that the proportion of silver particles must reach at least 30% to have sufficient effect, so it is not cheap.
Type 3 :Additive-added silver fiber
Compared with silver-plated coating and forged fusion, additives are post-finishing additions with the highest cost-effectiveness. Of course, the shortcomings are also obvious. Like other additives, there is a limit on the number of washings.

Key points for distinguishing
1.Feel
High-quality materials are thin, soft and breathable. Because pure silver is applied on the fiber with a special process, it feels smoother, and has great ductility and softness.
2. Freshness
Clothes made of high-quality silver fiber are antibacterial and deodorizing. Even if they are not washed or changed for a week, there will be no sweat and body odor, which controls the generation of odor from the source.
3. Washability
After fiber is produced, it will undergo strict washing tests to ensure the number of washes it can tolerate and its service life; after a maximum of a dozen washes, the number and durability of silver ions in auxiliary silver fiber are relatively low, and the silver component that works is relatively small, so the antibacterial and refreshing effects will be discounted.
4. Price
In order to ensure that pure silver is firm and does not fall off, the process of high-quality silver fiber is complicated and the cost is high, so its price is higher than similar products, and it is known as a light luxury product among materials.
